This is a collection of short descriptions of several national and international shotokan karate organizations. This is by no means a complete list, and suggestions for additions can be made on the comments page.

International Shobukan Karate Association

The ISKA is an organization dedicated to the "promotion of Shotokan Karate-do and friendship with all practitioners" [ISKA]. Its goals are to learn and practice traditional karate, and to follow the principles behind it. Each dojo that wishes to become a member of the ISKA must submit an application that will be reviewed at the headquarters in Japan, thereby preserving the quality of teaching provided by schools affiliated with the ISKA. After acceptance, the dojo will be affiliated directly with the Hombu Dojo in Japan.

International Karate Association

The IKA was founded in 1953 in Japan to "promote traditional Japanese Karate" [IKA]. Its goal is to spread karate, especially Gosoku Ryu, the style developed by Takayuki Kubota. The IKA headquarters were moved to California in 1964 under the leadership of Grand Master Kubota. In 1989, Gosoku Ryu was recognized internationally as a new, unique style, and as its creator, the Grand Master was granted the title of "Soke".

International Shotokan Karate Federation

The ISKF, founded by Teruyuki Okazaki in 1977, promotes traditional Shotokan Karate as developed by Gichin Funakoshi [ISKF]. Some followers of Shotokan are upset with how it has become more focused on sport-styles, rather than the way Funakoshi envisioned it [MAI], and the ISKF is especially focused on avoiding this, as Okazaki was a direct student of Funakoshi.

Japan Karate Association

The JKA is an international organization with members in more than 100 countries [JKA]. It is the only organization recognized by the Japanese government as an association for the promotion of karate. The JKA approaches karate less as a self-defense mechanism and more as an art "whose aim is the harmonizing of mind and body ... for total confidence and self-mastery" [JKA].

Shotokan Karate of America

SKA was founded in Los Angeles by Tsutomu Ohshima in 1955 to teach traditional shotokan karate [SKA]. Ohshima was a direct student of Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan. SKA is also affiliated with several other national Shotokan organizations worldwide.

World Traditional Karate Organization

WTKO is an organization that promotes the values and principles of traditional Shotokan Karate from the late nineteen hundreds [WTKO]. Their major goal is to preserve these values and to connect like-minded groups and individuals around the world while completely avoiding any political influences and international issues.
